Flowers, particularly roses, and their colors have specific associations as to their meaning . What those associations and meanings are is the subject of this article.
Meanings of Colors:
- White Roses – Nothing can compete with the symbol of purity more than a white rose. This color has been used for Valentine’s Day Weddings as a symbol of young love, new beginnings and true emotions. The white rose can also symbolize reverence, humility, and innocence.
- Pink Roses – Pink roses are often used to say thank you. They typically have a happy air about them , showing thankfulness, grace, and happiness.
- Red Roses – The red rose has throughout history had more meanings than any other rose. The red rose has been used by nations and religions as symbols. The red rose is definitely the rose of love, passion, and romance. More of these roses are grown and sold than any other flower. Their popularity is unsurpassed around the world. Valentine’s Day sees the red rose as being given as a true expression of love and affection.
- Yellow Roses – The yellow rose doesn’t have a deep romantic meaning. It represents a feeling of joy and congratulations. It is often used for graduations and other occasions where one is being congratulated. Its color elicits a light airy feeling.
- Purple Roses – The purple rose, in some instances can begin a romantic relationship. If one receives lavender or purple roses they can be interpreted as love at first site or as from a secret admirer. As a flower from a secret admirer it shows a very passionate feeling.
- Orange Roses – Sometimes orange roses are used to tell someone that an existing relationship needs to go further. They can also be used for new bosses, coaches, etc.
- Coral Roses – In many instances the coral roses can be used in the same manner as the orange roses as the color is pretty much the same.
- Blue Roses – Blue Roses do not really exist. They are a color that is made by adding dye to white roses as one example. A blue rose can be made by dipping a white rose into a bowl of blue food coloring.
- Black Roses – This is also is not a natural color but can be dyed like blue roses. The black rose does bestow a very ominous impression in that it can symbolize death. Some believe that it can be used to mean rebirth, but that is left up to those receiving this strange color.
Mixing rose colors in an arrangement of multi-color arrangements can express some other feeling and ideas. The combination of red and white have said to signify unity. Other combinations can elicit other feelings.
The meaning behind the rose colors is a fascinating theory and can actually have different meanings in different cultures. Fundamentally the meaning rests with the giver of roses and how the other person receives them and perceives their meaning.
