Is it possible to tell if you are trapped inside a toxic relationship? Let us see:

Your partner puts you down (verbally) in front of others. While your partner says they love you, their actions don’t back it up. Your partner is controlling, reading your mail or showing up at places you are just to check up on you Your partner tries to make you dependent on them. You have changed things about yourself to please them.

Toxic relationship is simply draining and will just limit your growth. So, you might be wondering why someone can end up in a toxic relationship? Why would anyone be willing to stay in a relationship that is full of abuse, whether physical or verbal?

A toxic relationship has a cycle. There’s a honeymoon period, followed by a blow up, followed by a reconciliation, at which point the cycle begins anew.

When you just meet someone new, it is obviously the honeymoon period. It is only after a period of time do you realize that you are already trapped in a toxic relationship. Once you reach that stage, you will find it tough to get out.

A common reason why some people end up in toxic relationships is because they grew up in a toxic environment. Therefore, they simply repeat the patterns of their childhood without being conscious about it. They simply don’t know any better. Others believe they don’t deserve to be happy. While they are others who like to be the caregiver.

In order to get out of a toxic relationship, the first step you need to do is to be aware of the fact that you do have choices. A lot of times, people choose to stay in toxic relationships because of their low self esteem. Very often, they suffer from depression too.

When you realize that you do have the power to choose what you want, it is time to start standing up for yourself. Most probably, your partner may be trying to put you down and telling you that it is always your fault. Do not believe in these negativity or it may be hard for you to find the courage to walk out of the relationship, or even heal it.

For some, it can be helpful working in therapy groups. This can help them get out or heal a toxic relationship.

The good news is that some people are able to break the cycles of toxic relationships. Some of them leave the relationship and form new, healthier bonds.

But others are actually able to repair their relationship and stay in it.

The truth is most relationships can be saved. Sometimes, all it takes is just that little bit of space. Sometimes, counseling may be necessary. However, if both partners are willing to put in the necessary effort, renewing the bonds can be done.

The first thing you need to decide is that the relationship must improve or you’re willing to walk away. If you aren’t willing to walk away, you’ll never be able to heal that which divides you.

As soon as you managed to free yourself from that dependency, which happens to be the core of your toxic relationship, you can begin to be more assertive. Never try nagging as it seldom works. All you need to say are, “I need you to love me”, “I need you to support me”, or “I need you to give me your truthful opinion”.

If you cannot get what is needed, your partner should know that you are willing to walk away from the relationships.

A healthy relationship needs contribution from both parties. In a toxic relationship, it is only a one way contribution. You definitely have the power to change that situation, but you must be willing to start harnessing the power.
