Of all the problems a relationship can have it is those of a sexual nature that often affect couple the most and in particular, male impotence. Although there could be many underlying reasons for the male impotence, most of the time something can be done to correct the situation.

Male impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is the inability to maintain an erection for a long enough time to have sex. There are various conditions surrounding the term male impotence as some men can get an erection but not all the time whereas others are unable to ever achieve an erection or only for very short periods. This actually affects more men than is commonly thought and although estimates vary, for obvious reasons, as much as ten percent of American men may have this condition.

To understand impotence, it helps to have a basic understanding of how an erection happens; the penis has a large amount of spongy tissue, through which blood vessels run, and some muscle. Sexual feelings which can be generated in the mind or manually by stimulation activate nerves which send blood into the penis. The penis, now filled with blood becomes hard and erect; when this erection ends, muscles force the blood back out.

Often, if the signals to the nerves are blocked then blood will not flow into the penis thereby creating impotence. In most male impotence situations the underlying reason for the problem is because of a situation like being an alcoholic or a condition like diabetes for example.

There are also certain conditions that affect the blood vessels that can create male impotence in the same way that a procedure on any of the following areas; prostate, bladder or urethra can also cause impotence to occur. Nerve signals may be altered due to psychological reasons including anxiety and stress.

Unless the male makes an appointment with his doctor who can asses this situation, the impotence is likely to continue. Exercise may reduce impotence in older men and other lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and losing weight may also help.
