The Basics of Growing Vegetables in Garden

Growing vegetables in garden of your own has many benefits. It is not only a good hobby but also a good exercise. You can have pure vegetables without worrying about pesticides and other chemicals. It is a great outdoor activity. The satisfaction that you get when you use the vegetables from your own garden is beyond definition. You will have to feel it. Growing vegetables in garden is a good way to bring your children close to nature. So how can one go about growing vegetables in garden?

The most common misconception is that you need a lot of space for a vegetable garden. The space needed depends on your requirement and the type of vegetables you wish to grow. If you want to be self sufficient with respect to vegetables then you will need some space. But if you just want to have some vegetables to supplement your regular buy, then you could do with 2-3 tomato plants or beans runners. You could grow the beans runners or tomato plants in pots and keep it in the patio or other place where you get sufficient sun light. 

If you intend to produce most of the vegetables that you need, then you will have to go scientifically about growing vegetables in garden. First you will have to decide on the type of vegetables you want to grow. This depends on the season when you first start your cultivation. You can grow tomato, cucumber, pepper, melons, egg plants and beans etc as summer crops. Some of the winter crops are lettuce, broccoli, spinach, peas etc.

Lot of physical work is involved when you first grow your garden. This should not deter you. You have to find a place in the yard which gets enough sunlight during the day. The bed has to be made by digging and raking. The soil must be dug at least 1 foot down the ground. This loosening of soil is necessary for the proper penetration of roots to the ground to ensure support and to absorb water and nutrients. Fertilizers have to be added to the loosened soil and mixed thoroughly. The plants have to be seeded separately and when the saplings come out it has to be transferred to the respective pits in the made up bed. Some type of vegetables has to be sown directly on the prepared bed. If the growing season is short, it is better to buy the bedding plant and transplant it to the bed to ensure the growth .Proper spacing has to be provided between each of the plants to provide room for the plants to grow, flower and bear fruits.

The plants that grow in height may not be placed next to short plants in the direction of the sun as they will obstruct the sunlight from reaching the short plants. This will result in reduced produce. The soil bed has to be watered regularly. The weeds have to be pulled out. If there is any insect attack, organic insecticides can be used. By following these basics you could successfully grow your own garden.
