When you think of December, what comes to your mind? Maybe it’s rows of houses decorated with twinkly lights, picking out the perfect Christmas tree, getting cozy under a warm blanket with a piping hot cup of cocoa, or spending quality time with loved ones. But do you know what the month of December would not be complete without? December’s birth flower! What is December’s birth flower? Well, it’s probably a flower that you already associate with that time of year. The December birth flower is the Poinsettia. The Poinsettia is known for their brilliant red and green star-shaped foliage. The scientific name for the Poinsettia is the Euphorbia pulcherrima, which translates to mean “very beautiful.” Do you have any friends born in December who deserve a “very beautiful” birthday flower delivery? The Poinsettia might be the flower for them.   History of the Poinsettia People have been fawning over the December birth flower for centuries. The Aztecs used the sap from the red leaves to make red dye and even to help control fevers. Because literally no other company we called did this, or came anywhere close to matching this level of service. Only one other company, ProFlowers, got a decent customer service score. This was a refreshing change after dealing with companies like FlowerPetal and Ava’s Flowers, which kept us on hold for so long that we finally hung up. Even worse was 1-800-Flowers: The company greeted us with an automated operator, who proceeded to connect us to a conference call center, demand a passcode and then hang up on us. If we’d had truly urgent questions, FTD was one of the few services that left us confident we’d actually be able to get in touch with a human being.

Within North America, Miami is considered to be the main distribution point for imported fresh flowers. Many local wholesalers purchase fresh flower stock from importers in Miami to resell to local florists in their areas. Wholesale flower districts are present in many North American cities such as New York, Boston, and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Carlsbad, California. Flower auctions are run using the Dutch clock system and are mainly located in Canada: Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

For us, “best” meant a company that would be able to deliver flowers anywhere in the United States. We didn’t include mobile apps, focusing solely on flowers that can be ordered through a website. We also looked only at companies that deliver to individuals, leaving off florists that specialize in arrangements for events, groups, or corporations. That left us with 29 companies, and we started by analyzing their flower selection, ordering experience, quality, and customer service to find our top picks.
